A NET ZERO CHALLENGE

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BUILDING PLANS

The image describes a conceptual framework for sustainable building design in the early stages. It emphasizes four key principles: Performance (functionality), Systems (efficiency), Culture (social integration), and Experience (user enjoyment). These principles guide the creation of a block plan, ensuring the building meets both practical and social needs.

Structure- Wall, Roof, Window, Floor

The steel frame serves as the structural skeleton of the building, providing support and stability. Concrete walls are used for the building's enclosure and can provide structural support. When properly treated and clad with vinyl, wood frames can provide an aesthetically pleasing and energy-efficient option for doors and windows. Bitumen roofs are known for their durability and weather resistance

Lighting and Equipment

LED Lighting: Light-emitting Emitting Diode (LED) fixtures are highly energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional incandescent or fluorescent lights.

Occupancy Sensors: Install occupancy sensors to automatically turn off lights in unoccupied spaces. This helps prevent unnecessary energy consumption when areas are not in use.

Daylight Sensors: Daylight sensors can adjust artificial lighting levels based on the amount of natural light available, ensuring that lights are only used as needed.

HVAC

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC systems are energy-efficient and flexible air conditioning and heating systems commonly used in commercial and residential buildings.

High-Efficiency Heat Pumps: Heat pumps are efficient HVAC systems that can provide both heating and cooling. Ground-source (geothermal) or air-source heat pumps are often used in net-zero buildings due to their high efficiency and ability to utilize renewable energy sources.

PV Array Sizing

By generating your own electricity, you can significantly reduce or eliminate your reliance on grid-supplied electricity, leading to lower electricity bills.

Solar arrays situated east-west are becoming an industry trend rapidly because these structures can squeeze in more rows and panels and, therefore, have a greater generation capacity than their south-north-facing cousins.
