Housing

This project tackles the challenges faced by Makoko, a Lagos shantytown suffering from overpopulation, pollution, and eviction threats. The plan proposes new sustainable housing solutions to improve living conditions for residents. Additionally, a comprehensive master plan aims to bring order and improve the flow of goods and services within the community. This focus on infrastructure aims to empower Makoko residents by creating a platform for them to sell their local produce, fostering self-reliance and economic development. This project was a collaborative effort between 3 other teammates (Khyati Patel, Aditya Jahagirdar, Yashwanth Varma) and me.

PROBLEM EVOLUTION

Resources and infrastructure are under significant strain as more people move to Lagos. With a growing population, more available land must be available, driving up housing costs. Ineffective housing policies exacerbate the housing shortage and affordability issues. Due to limited space, high demand, and poor policy implementation, there is a need for more affordable housing options.

As affordable housing options dwindle, people are forced to create informal settlements, often with poor living conditions. A cycle where rapid economic growth attracts people to Lagos, but the city struggles to keep up with the resulting housing demands. This can lead to social problems like slums and inadequate living conditions.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

1.jpg

These are conceptual zoning plans for a new development project. Existing development shows existing buildings and infrastructure. Adding New Housing in Open Water for Relocation highlights a planned area of new housing built on open water that will likely relocate residents from other areas. Relocation of House Dwellers in Phases indicates a staged process of moving residents to the new housing development. The plan prioritizes accessibility by placing most new programming (areas with a designated purpose) near roads. This would allow for more effortless movement of people and goods throughout the development. A significant portion of the land is designated for agriculture and green space. This reflects the importance placed on preserving the natural environment.

Performance refers to a building’s functionality and ability to meet the needs of its occupants. It considers energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality. Systems encompass the technical aspects of the building, including its heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, and water systems. The goal is to design efficient systems, minimize waste, and use renewable resources whenever possible. Cultural principles consider the social and community needs the building serves and how it integrates with the surrounding environment. It’s about designing culturally appropriate buildings, respecting local traditions, and promoting a sense of community. Experience focuses on how people will interact with and feel within the building. It considers natural light, access to nature, acoustics, and aesthetics. The aim is to create comfortable and inspiring buildings and promote occupants' well-being. By considering all four of these principles together throughout the design process, the goal is to create buildings that are functional and efficient and meet their users' social and cultural needs, while providing a positive and sustainable overall experience.
