GHAG

Nature Information Centre & Centre for Environmental Education

The majority of Mumbai's residents are unaware of the park's existence or its significance. This design project proposes a dual-purpose facility: a Nature Information Centre and a Centre for Environmental Education.

The centre will:

  • Educate: Inform visitors about SGNP's diverse ecosystems, the park's role in environmental health, and the current threats it faces from human encroachment and pollution.

  • Inspire: The design will showcase the park's beauty and ecological importance, fostering a sense of connection with nature and a desire for its preservation.

Target Audience: The project is designed to enlighten the broader Mumbai community, particularly those unaware of SGNP's existence and its ecological importance.

Urgency: With the park facing ongoing threats, raising awareness becomes crucial to mobilize public support for conservation efforts.

Overall, this project aims to bridge the gap between the city and its natural sanctuary, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility for the future of SGNP.

Increased Public Support: A more informed public is more likely to advocate for the park's conservation and funding for its protection.

Reduced Environmental Pressures: By understanding the park's value, people may be less likely to engage in activities that harm it (littering, wood harvesting).

Sustainable Ecotourism: The centre could be a hub for responsible tourism, generating revenue for park maintenance and conservation efforts.

Benefits for Mumbai:

Improved Air and Water Quality: Healthy ecosystems like SGNP play a vital role in filtering air and water, benefiting public health.

Reduced Urban Heat Island Effect: Green spaces like SGNP help regulate temperatures, mitigating the urban heat island effect that can worsen pollution and discomfort.

Enhanced Quality of Life: Access to nature offers opportunities for recreation, stress reduction, and improved mental well-being for city residents.
